11 Things to Know About iOS 11

  • It has a brand new shiny app store
  • The iPad seems to have received a lot more attention in iOS 11:
    • The new dock is very similar to that found on MacOS
    • Multitasking has been further refined in this version of iOS
    • You can now drag and drop items (image, text, files) between apps using multitasking
  • It has a file explorer although it still doesn’t give file system access, it’s more like a central hub for apps to share files between them
  • AirPlay has been upgraded with more functionality (especially for developers)
  • It doesn’t run 32 bit apps at all. So make sure your projects are set to the latest architecture
  • There are some new and updated APIs that could lead to very interesting and exciting new apps:
    • Core ML – Easy to access, built in Machine Learning models
    • ARKit – Takes the difficulty out of making Augmented Reality apps
    • SiriKit has been updated to offer more access to it’s features and services
  • And probably the biggest thing to know about iOS 11 is the iPhone X, Apple’s biggest iPhone design change since the iPhone 6/6 Plus
